Kaya Natin! and Merck, Sharp, & Dohme recently launched the Champions for Health Governance Awards, which seeks to honor the country’s most outstanding health programs and local government units. The project is a brainchild of the former DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo. The Champions for Health Governance Awards also aims to help the country achieve the Millennium Development Goals, specifically reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and reducing cases of diseases such as HIV, AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. For MSD Director Karen Villanueva, the awards are also an opportunity to honor LGUs who have displayed exemplary leadership in the area of health.

CITING public health’s critical role in the country’s growth and development, good government advocates on Monday launched the Champions for Health Governance Awards, a private-public endeavor that would seek and reward outstanding community health programs at the city and municipal levels.

At simple rites on Monday at Casa Roces across Malacañang Palace, officers of the Kaya Natin Movement, in partnership with Merck, Sharp & Dohme Philippines, the Ateneo School of Government, the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Department of Health announced the nationwide search for the so-called Champions for Health Governance awardees.

The organizers said local governments’ community health programs would be judged on criteria such as local leadership, transprency and accountability, effectiveness, innovation, health resource management and community engagement.

They added that the programs would be evaluated “based on how these have worked toward  achieving the Millenium Development Goals aimed at reducing child mortality rates, improving maternal health and reducing incidences of diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus-acute immunodeficiency syndrome, malaria and tuberculosis.

It was also explained that the programs eligible for entrynto the awards must be running for at least two years to qualify the winning LGUs that will receive cash grants for their programs.

In a statement, MSD Philippines said public and private initiatives such as the Champions for Health Governance Awards are the “key to ensuring that our public health system will be prepared to face future challenges.”

“The local chief executives working with their local health boards have such a critical role to play in improving the health and well-being of the people in the community,” said Karen Villanueve, MSD Philippines external affairs director.
